Joey 1951-2001It's not exactly the type of thing you expect to hear on a lazy Easter Sunday.
After getting back from beach with my friend, I opened the news manager at Punkmusic dot com, and saw so many postings regarding Joey's death that I couldn't count them. People from all over were posting about the tragic news of our punk rock hero. My fingers began to shake as I started reading each one. I didn't want to post the news. Every entry was unique and heart-felt. The reality set in as I began pushing the publish button on as many as I could … I didn't want to pick which fan was going to break this horrible news to the punk-rock community. So I just posted all I could.

| This morning when I got in town from business, the very first thing I did was log on here to PUNK MUSIC. After being away for 2 months, I thought there had to have been something intresting happen in the PUNK world while I was gone. But intresting wasn't the case, I looked at my moniter in shock to see the headline of "Joey Ramones' Memorial Page, click here". Still sitting here and typing this message I'm in total disbelief that the worlds ultimate Punk icon has left us. I'm sure that all the 'old school' punkers feel me, when I say that THE RAMONES were the break through in the PUNK music scene music as it was will never be the same. To the band and the family all of the PUNK community sends our deepest regards, Joey was, and will always be an icon. (at least to me)For if it weren't for Joey, and THE RAMONES, I would never had found the PUNK scene. And it is because of THE RAMONES that, SHEENA, me, IS A PUNK ROCKER! | ||

| I think it's so damn cool that all of you are coming out and showing your respect for THE ICON of punk rock. we've even got multiple languages here now. That is too cool. Anyway, I think we should all try to take solace in the fact that the punk spirit, and the OLD punk spirit, I mean, lives on in bands like AFI, Rancid, The Nerve Agents, Tiger Army, PennyWise, Nofx, Bad Religion, and oh so many more. We're living in a good time. Pop punk is gradually losing it's credibility. We will enter a new Golden Age soon. It's just a bloody shame that our father wasn't around to witness this. He knows, tho. He saw them the time they played with The Clash and Sex Pistols. I am very sorry I never got to see them in concert or at a club, I wish I could have. It is sooo sad that Joey Ramone died. | when my hardcore band played its first gig, four days ago, we included a cover of "sheena is a punk rocker". despite the diversity of musical tastes in the club, ranging from emo, ska/punk, hardcore, reggae... | The first time I saw the Ramones was at hte CBGB's. The played with Blondie and Talking Heads. Though these other bands are good and got main srteam attention they are not the up to snuff with The Ramones. Did you ever hear someome say,"yea we were so inspired by Blondie." No, But talk to Green Day, Blink 182, MXPX and so on. NO RAMONES NO Quality music today. Next time you hear Green Day or whoever, smile and know that Joey made this happen. | Hey. I know I'm not the only one out there who misses Joey and his brilliant music, but I've just been buggin to get all this off my chest. I'm only 13, and have been raised on Nirvana, The Sex Pistols, and of course, The Ramones. Joey's gone now, just like Sid Vicious, Darby Crash, and Kurt Cobain. I'm too young to remember them most of them, and Kurt died when I was only 7 years old. But I'm here for Joey's, the worst moment in my life. I sat in my room, crying, with "Pinhead" on repeate in my stereo, staring at one of my posters, fixated on Joey. Why did this happen? It wasn't supposed to. The thing that seperates Joey from most casualties from the hardened lifestyle which is punk rock, is that they died because of their own self-destructive behavior. (God bless them, anyway). Nature took Joey. God took Joey. Why? Why? Why? Why? The words of the song filtered through my mind and became obsoleite. It ment nothing now, if not something more sacred. Joey's voice would never again be heard coming out of the man himself, but he lives on in various ways. Joey lives on in our minds, in our hearts. I have my own WWJD. What Would Joey Do? He survives, pulsating through speakers in our rooms, apartments, cars, computers... wherever that addicted Ramones fan comes to hit themselves up. He lives on in US. The gloomy day after Joey's death, I saw a man walking in the park, all alone. He looked about late 20's, early 30's. His head was shaved, though it didn't look very well tended to, because it was fuzzy and reminded me of a peach. He donned ripped jeans, and a black tee-shirt that bore the Ramones' all-too-familiar logo. I stared at his, completely fixated, for I was not alone in the world. There, was another real live Ramones fan! It's quite silly, now that I think about it... but nevertheless. He noticed me starring, and stuck his tongue at me, like, "What is this little POSER staring at me for?" I shook my head. "I like your shirt." I told him. He stopped, and looked at me hard and long, I was scared I might turn to stone. He smiled, and gave me the rock on sign. "Rest in Peace, Joey" He whispered, and sat down on a bench. "May I join you?" I asked. The man looked sad, and reminded me of the way I felt. He nodded. "Didn't your parents ever tell you not to talk to strangers?" He asked. "My parents also tell me not to sniff glue," I replied. He smiled again. I liked this, talking with another Ramones following misfit. I sat down next to him. We talked for a while. The 30 and 13 year old Ramones fans who had just met in the park. He carried a bag with him. I asked him what was in it. He told me that he was pawning some old stuff for cash. I asked him why he was in such desperate need for money. "I'm not." He said. He told me he didn't need to stuff anymore, and wanted to make a significant donation to the American Cancer Society. "For Joey," He told me, justifibly. I told him it was to late. He told me it was for future generations. I was impressed. Here was someone who cared enough to get off their ass and do something so future Joeys wouldn't have to suffer. So people like me, and you, and future children don't have to. I bid him farewell, and decided to do the same. I'm $35.00 and a clock radio short, but now I'm able to mourn Joey, but know maybe I'm making a difference. I urge you people to do the same. We love you Joey. You live on in every fan, no matter what age. Gabba Gabba, we accept you, we accept you, one of us. | 12:00am the n\morning after easter Sunday i arrive at work and check out some news on the wire and BOOM! Joey Ramone dead at 49. At 27, I've only begun to realize what the Ramones has meant to me growing up in a small, Pennsylvania-Dutch town. And being one of the few individuals that were not Pennsylvania Dutch; I didn't relate on many levels...and music was no different. Many of my friends didn't quite get the Ramones outside of the handful of hits they produced. At the innocent age of 17...how could they living in a town straight out of the "Happy Days" formula for success. The Ramones taught me many things...one of which is to look at the world with a cocked head. If it is true that art immitates life; then it is evident that the ridiculous nature of a great majority of Ramones tunes are a reflection of society through the eyes of our greatly missed friend and mentor...Joey Ramone. I could only gasp and finally come to grips with the fact that we DO have so little time here...and that one of the greats will have no more inspiring words for me...only inspiring memories. | ||
