Press Release

[direct link]
Crossface Records is proud to announce the signing of Cleveland, OH’s Heads Held High (http://www.myspace.com/headsheldhigh and http://www.h3punk.com). The quintet blends energetic and melodic hardcore punk in a style indebted to such greats as Gorilla Biscuits, Black Flag, and Dag Nasty; seamlessly meshed with modern influences like Strike Anywhere, Ignite, A Wilhelm Scream and Bane. Technical proficiency, explosive energy, and unrelenting sincerity are fused together to create music which is more than a nostalgic retread of the band's influences, but is instead a re-envisioning of the rules which govern so much of the modern hardcore landscape. These qualities shine through on every track of the band’s second self-produced, self-released and nationally distributed E.P. “Do or Do Not…There is No Try".

Both of their releases have garnered a great deal of praise from both the press and their peers. Several of their songs have also appeared on nationally and internationally released compilations.

Lyrically, Heads Held High delves into a variety of subjects. They promote tolerance and freedom of expression above all else; but also deal with issues, such as the importance of seeking knowledge, educated sociopolitical commentary , and the importance of maintaining youthful ideals and aspirations in a world which often strives to crush them.

H3 has spent the last two years booking shows regionally and in their home state of Ohio in an attempt to share their music and message with anyone willing to listen. They have played with a plethora of established modern day stalwarts and upcoming firebrands ranging from The Spudmonsters and Murphy’s Law to Comeback Kid and Only Crime.

Heads Held High is currently playing shows, booking a summer tour, and writing material for a proposed full length release while shopping their most recent recording to interested parties. Heads Held High has an upcoming Midwest to east coast tour with Run Riot starting June 27th and ending July 12th. Check out their web pages to see if they are playing a city near you.

"Hatred On The Rise" RF7 In The Studio
Posted by   on Friday, Apr 25 @ 03:10 PM PDT
[direct link]
“Hatred’s On The Rise” as RF7 teams up with Veteran Producer Earle Mankey on its latest project

Local LA Punk stalwarts RF7 are in the studio working in two phases. It’s the classic contrast of, youth vs. experience.

Group leaders Felix Alanis & Nick Lamagna are splitting the new project in two halves.

In a contrast of two generations, half of the songs have been recorded with the original classic 80’s line up of Walt Phelan (Drums), Robert Armstrong (Bass) and Steve “Dorant” Drojenski (Rhythm Guitar) and half songs by the current line including Tony Calderone (Rhythm & Lead Guitars), Big Mike (Drums) and Xavier Chavez (Bass). As a curveball twist to the project each band goes head to head with their own versions of the title track, “Hatred On The Rise.” Nick calls it RF7’s own American Idol Punk challenge, “We record, you decide”.

Earle Mankey adds his vast studio experience having worked across the musical spectrum from The Beach Boys, Concrete Blonde & The Leaving Trains along with punk favorites, The Weirdo’s The Dickies, The Skulls, The Adicts etc.

Mankey’s first impressions of the project… “there’s two distinct personalities emerging here with the common denominator being Nick’s guitar work and Felix’s unmistakable vocals.” This will be a must have for RF7 purists and punks of all ages!

The recording is expected to wrap up in April with final production completed in May. “We’re looking for a fall release but haven’t settled on a label at this point,” says Felix. http://www.myspace.com/rf7oldschool

Less Than Jake's GNV FLA

Less Than Jake have come up with a name for their new album ... GNV FLA. (after their hometown of Gainesville, Florida). The CD will be released on June 24th and will be the first new stuff on their new label, Sleep It Off Records. Unlike FBR, SIO is self-owned and controlled. Interesting huh? How long do you suppose it will take before Sleep It Off becomes owned and/or controlled by the conglomerates?

Last month, the label re-released four of the band's early titles (Pezcore; Goodbye, Blue & White; Losers, Kings and Things We Don't Understand) plus an expanded DVD thing called The People's History of Less Than Jake.

The new album was recorded at Atlas Studios in Chicago and produced by Matt Allison (Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, The Falcon). GNV FLA Track Listing below:

1. City Of Gainesville
2. The State Of Florida
3. Does the Lion City Still Roar?
4. Summon Monsters
5. Abandon Ship
6. Handshake Meets Pokerface
7. Settling Son
8. Malachi Richter's Liquor's Quicker
9. Golden Age Of My Negative Ways
10. The Space They Can't Touch
11. Conviction Notice
12. This One's Gonna Leave A Bruise
13. The Life Of The Party Has Left The Building

ALL reunites for Chicago Riot Fest

[direct link]

The influential, post-Descendents punk-rock band ALL will reunite to headline the annual raucous celebration of Riot Fest on Oct. 10-12 at the Congress Theatre.

Coming together again for the first time in two decades, the lineup will be the one behind the albums "Allroy’s Revenge," "Allroy Saves" and "Perculator," with vocalist Scott Reynolds, drummer Bill Stevenson, guitarist Karl Alvarez and bassist Stephen Egerton.

Together with the annual Hideout Block Party and the Pitchfork Music Festival, Riot Fest is one of the best independently produced celebrations of cutting-edge rock music in the U.S. -- and a welcome reminder that mega-bucks corporate sponsorships ala Lollapalooza aren't the only way to fund a festival. Tickets for this year's concert go on sale at 8 a.m. on April 24 via www.riotfest.org .

Indonesian Screamo Band "Broken Heart Syndrom"

Here it comes, debut album from the finest screamo band in Indonesia. Broken Heart Syndrome, a band’s whose emotional integrity bypasses musical wallowing and goes straight for the mainline of your emotional jugular with intensely personal lyrics and dense blasts of guitars. There is no “wink” from Broken Heart Syndrome informing the listener they are steeped in the apathetic irony governing the charts; at long last a band has arrived that has the guts and the talent to enter a brave new world of sincerity. Broken Heart Syndrome just gives you life, yours and theirs as a package. Singing their songs feels less like a drug and more like a journey into your own heart of darkness where you may ride their lyrical insights to new levels of self actualization.

Release of Punk Rock Concoction Volume 2
Posted by   on Wednesday, Apr 16 @ 03:34 AM PDT
[direct link]

Brewmaster Dave writes:
Last August at Warped Tour, 5000 copies of Punk Rock Concoction Volume 1 were thrown out to the crowd as Bad Religion and Pennywise played. The first volume had 26 punk rock bands, mostly unsigned, but all talented. The first volume received so much good feedback that a second volume was in order. Punk Rock Concoction Volume 2 was released in March, 2008. It also has mostly unsigned punk rock bands, mostly residing in southern California, but includes a few bands from Arizona, Oregon, Georgia, Canada, and Japan. Volume 2, like volume 1 is still free. It has some of the best bands from the area on it and is 75 minutes long. Volume 2 features bands such as Hit the Switch, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Chaser, and Pour Habit. This could be the making for a more modern and free version of the old Epitaph Punk-O-Rama compilations.

Could is the key word there. Ok, I'll put up the link www.myspace.com/punkrockconcoction

OK, I know this isn't exactly new news, but I've been pretty out of everything for a while.

The fest is a two day event on the dates of June 26-27. The Queers will be the main headliner this year.

This news arrives right on the tail of new releases from all three bands. Teenage Rehab who released an album on March 25th, Moral Crux who has their vinyl/cd release out April 29th and Pink Lincolns who are doing a couple of represses of some way out of print material, along with some new tracks.

All bands are a part of the Jailhouse! Records label, who is also one of the sponsers of the event. Check out www.poppunkbored.com, or www.Insubordinationfest.com for more information.

Harbour 81 "Live Your Dreams"

After the break-up of Rotterdam hardcore band Second Chance, Perry and Bauer went on with a new band called "Harbour 81". The recordings for their debut album took over a year, mainly because all the recordings, mixing and mastering were done the DIY way at Perry’s house. Warbird Entertainment (Atlanta, Georgia) will release the album in the USA on May 20, 2008. In Europe the CD will be available thru the bands website.

The album, called "Live Your Dreams" contains 11 hardcore punk rock anthems. Guest vocals were recorded with Jeff Breakdown, Buddha (Blood For Blood) and, off course, Dries (Second Chance).

Two of the songs have been posted on Harbour 81’s MySpace page, www.myspace.com/harbour81 | www.warbirdentertainment.com

Punk Rock Poser?
Posted by   on Friday, Apr 11 @ 01:38 PM PDT
[direct link]

This is COOL, even though I haven't read it yet.

from Behind the Velvet Rope (wherever that is)
Punk Rock music nowadays is everywhere, on the radio, television, commercials, the internet, and beyond. It's totally accesible and totally become as common as a loaf of Wonderbread. But is it real? Depends on who you ask. Some bands and more to the point, some MUSICIANS claim to be "Old Skool Punk Rock" but the reality is more like PUNK ROCK POSER. One of the most heralded returns of a well known OC Punk Rock band is turning up some interesting information lately regarding their 8th album. Having been well received by the industry and fans alike, this band's latest album which was just released last August, is by far and wide one of the best they have ever put out. Group effort? Almost. While those who were present at the recording of this band's latest album know that NOT EVERY MEMBER participated in the creation or recording of this album-THE FANS AND THE WORLD DON'T. Like the Johnny Rotten saying goes; "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?" The truth is, that while there are 5 members in this band, only 4 of them actually had ANYTHING to do with the album's creation, writing, pre-production, and ultimately the recording of their album. Sadly and pathetically, the one who showboats the most at shows, rolling around on stage like a epileptic in the middle of a seizure, COULD NOT and DID NOT have anything to do with the creation or recording of his band's latest album. Why? Count not showing up for practice, not practicing at home, and essentially the inability to play music he claims to have "in his blood"-BOTTOM LINE: HE DIDN'T KNOW HOW. The truth IS stranger than fiction folks. Sometimes when you scratch surface, all you get is more surface. That is the case here. Next time you're at one of their shows, take a closer look. Clean the wax outta your ears and really listen carefully to this band member's playing. Is he hitting all the right chords? NOT EVEN CLOSE. Is he singing on key? Painfully, NO. Is he rolling around on the stage, winking and pointing at the audience like a beauty queen on a float at the Rose Parade? YOU BETCHA. While there are scheduled show dates booked for this band and with the prospect of going to Europe at hand, the general consensus of the other members of this OC PUNK ROCK band are that they would rather cancel all their gigs then have to play 1 more embarrassing show. When you are part of a team, that team is only as good as it's members-and this member is full of hot air. Egos can only take you so far. Eventually, you better have the substance to back up all the posturing and posing. Is this thing even on? YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST

Interview with Joey Cape

[direct link]
Prolific musician and Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape recently sat down with The Paradigm Journal, an art and literary journal. Joey discusses his latest project, his creative process, and his thoughts on punk music.

Of particular note is that Joey will be recording a solo acoustic album for Bad Taste in the tradition of his Acoustic split with No Use for a Name's Tony Sly:

"I wanted to make an actual full-length solo record. I have since considered that split to be a bit of a cop-out. The songs were covers and I only had to record six. Also, I had everyone I know play on it. I play everything on the new one and I have recorded nearly twenty songs. It's been a huge undertaking and I feel it is officially my first."

Los Angeles California – Nerd Rock favorites Nerf Herder will be releasing their fourth album entitled “IV” on April 29th via their new deal with Oglio Records, distributed by Fontana/Universal. “IV” is produced by Angus Cooke (former The Ataris), owner of legendary Santa Barbara based Orange Whip Studios. Nerf Herder will tour to support “IV” which includes odes to cassettes, orange backpacks, golfshirts, orb clutching dragons, manatees, the awesomeness of Led Zeppelin, Santa Barbara, high school dances and later high school reunions all mixed with perhaps the album’s greatest secret ingredient, unrequited love.

The razor witted “IV” continues in the vein of the classic Nerf Herder of “Sorry”, “High Five Anxiety”, “Mr. Spock” and “Van Halen” fame, securing the band as one of melodic Geek Rock’s leading lights. Lev Grossman from Time Magazine’s “Nerd World” blog recently had not one but two Nerf Herder tracks in their Top 10 All Time Nerd-Pop and Nerdcore Songs. The new track “Led Zeppelin Rules” is an iTunes pre-release digital single, the non album “Affirmative Action” is an iTunes exclusive bonus track and the first official single from Nerf Herder “IV” is the lethally hummable pop masterpiece “WTC #7”. New music videos include “Oh Me, Oh My” and an animated video for “Manatee” by the brilliant Nathan Mazur (“Do You Like Waffles” from the Parry Gripp solo CD “For Those About To Shop, We Salute You”).

The band takes their name from a Star Wars Episode V The Empire Strikes Back reference — when Princess Leia insults Han Solo with "Why you stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder!”. They are also responsible for the Buffy The Vampire Slayer theme song and performed as the very last band to play show’s fictional venue during Buffy’s final season. Nerf Herder music can also be heard in the MLB 2K7 video game.

Nerf Herder is Parry Gripp, Charlie Dennis and Steve Sherlock. Linus of Hollywood will join the band for their 2008 live tour. Visit the Nerf Herder websites for tour dates and more. Get Nerf Herder 300 dpi cover art and listen to the full album streaming at the Oglio Records website, www.oglio.com.

EX-Dictators Guitarist to Release Solo CD
Posted by   on Tuesday, Feb 26 @ 01:39 PM PDT
[direct link]
Scott Kempner (Ex-DICTATORS, DEL-LORDS) finished his first solo album which is due out on June 10th on 00:02:59 Records. This is Kempner's first solo album in 12 years and he's pretty psyched about it. The album features Dion, Frank Funaro (Del-Lords), Mike Mesaros (Smithereens), Ed Greene and Bob Babbitt (Motown) and Ed Pettersen

Quote Kempner “This is a rock ’n ’roll album . . . if that means anything to anyone anymore,”
I think I can answer that. No, it doesn't. Let's just hope it's not a giant guitar noodle because, quite frankly, those kind of CDs really suck.

Still Remains are heading out on tour with Gwen Stacy, Catherine, and Secret and Whisper (none of which means anything to me but whatever). They also have some sort of competition running right now for where the top 5 cities with the most demanders will win a special pre-show acoustic set. Ooooh. Also, they get to meet & greet the band. Imagine that. Meeting AND greeting them. Let's all thank the band for this oppotunity because it's the kind of thing that only happens once in a life time. Sound exciting? No, I don't think so either.

Thrice, Say Anything Live on PRC Today

In case you haven't heard, PunkRadioCast announced how proud they are about two major label bands (Thrice (Vagrant / Universal) and Say Anything (Sony)) will be performing live on their Internet radio station today. Sadder than that is that both bands will be playing accoustic set (boo!), and even sadder is the fact that PRC is literally flooding eveyone and their brother's inbox with the news.

Worst of all is they are also interviewing them (boo!)

So why am I writing about it? Good question becuase I just don't know!

Details:
The performance will only be available live on the PunkRadioCast stream. The events will kick off at 1 pm ET with the pre-show kick off party hosted by MP3J Diana (nice name).

Performance schedule:
3:00 pm ET Interview with Max from Say Anything
3:30 pm ET Say Anything Perform
4:45 pm ET Interview with Thrice
5:00 pm ET Thrice Perform

I've really been out-of it lately, so a post about what's happening on No Idea seems appropriate.

They have a new Tim Version release "Decline of the Southern Gentleman", a Planes Mistaken for Stars CD/Double LP Vinyl "We Ride to Fight! The First Four Years" , and yet somethine else from Hot Water Music "Till the Wheels Fall Off" (will those guys EVER quit?)
Anyway, that's all I can muster out of this post except that you can listen to the new Tim Version album in its entirity at

To make up for NOT being able to order the band's new CD on their site, Minneapolis 3-piece punk band, Children 18:3 have announced a slew of tour dates in support of their upcoming self-titled T&N debut on February 26th. Definitly check these guys out... they're actually punk rock in a big way.

They also posted a new song for Valentine's day on their myspace site http://www.myspace.com/children183, but don't let that make you all mushy and shit becuase they're still a great band. Wow, I can't remember the last time I said that about a new T&N band...

These titles are available on the Dischord web-store and in local independent record shops.

New Stuff (sorta)
Joe Lally (Fugazi) released his second album, Nothing Is Underrated, on November 19, 2007. The album features collaborations with Ben Azzara (The Capitol City Dusters, DCIC), Andy Gale (Haram), Eddie Janney (Rites of Spring), Sam Krulewitch and Ricardo Lagomasino (Capillary Action), Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto (Fugazi). Joe is touring in the southern United States in mid-February with Edie Sedgwick. For dates check our tours page.

The members of Faraquet are working on a compilation album featuring songs released on singles from 1997-1998 as well as some unreleased material. All the songs have been re-mixed by Devin Ocampo and we hope to have the album ready for release on Dischord in the spring. The band is also planning to play some shows featuring their original line-up sometime around the release of the album.

Medications are soldiering on as a duo and have a show booked in March in Washington at DC9.
Edie Sedgwick, aka Justin Moyer (Antelope, El Guapo, Supersystem) has recorded a new album which is being mixed by Ian MacKaye and should see the light of day in some form later in 2008. Edie Sedgwick has traditionally been a solo affair but has lately evolved into an ensemble featuring Melissa Quinley (Soccer Team), and Jason Hutto (The Aquarium) as regular contributors, and Chad Molter (Medications) and Amy Farina (The Evens) as revolving time keepers. Edie will be touring with Joe Lally in mid-February.
